An overview of the documentary that tells the dark backstory of the popular brand
Brandy Hellville
Part 1
Simplistic, small, and exclusive. Brandy Melville began taking over girls' wardrobes in the 2010s and still has young girls in a chokehold. The brand is known for having "one size" clothes, that only fit the thinnest girls, and having basic designs. Brandy was all over Tumblr in the 2010s, made girls feel superior to those who didn’t wear it, and created a community and lifestyle that prided itself on its different kind of exclusivity. HBO recently released a documentary covering the dark side of the famous brand, Brandy Hellville & the Cult of Fast Fashion. In the introduction, someone says there is anti-semitism, sexism, and racism coursing through the veins of the people who run the company. The brand falls under the category of fast fashion to an insane extent and the documentary thoroughly explores the different negative effects of fast fashion. Before we dive deep into the controversial brand, I would like to give you a backstory.
The brand is known for having a beachy, soft, feminine look. It was all over Tumblr and Pinterest as outfit inspiration. The girls were the ‘tiny, ideal size’ and influenced teen and pre-teen girls who wanted to be a part of the ‘exclusive’ community which was purposefully part of the business plan. Buying a plain gray t-shirt from Brandy allowed them to join the ‘Brandy Melville lifestyle’. ‘Fashion is identity, especially for teenage girls’, and Brandy captured that the most out of any brand. They hired a lot of ‘it-girl’ influencers who posted on YouTube, Instagram, Tumblr, etc. A lot of the photographers were teenagers taking photos of teenagers which were uploaded on several different platforms. Through the YouTube videos, these girls were watching how the photoshoots work which also worked well as a promotion for the brand. Youtubers who didn’t work with the brand would still talk about it whether it was in a haul video or something else. In the documentary, there is a clip of Hannah Meloche from one of her videos saying she hopes she gets noticed by Brandy because she was wearing one of their tops. Brandy Melville doesn't have promotions besides social media. One of the women in the documentary says that it’s impossible to talk about Brandy without talking about social media. Their Instagram is full of skinny girls wearing their simple pieces but nothing more than that. A lot of these pictures were taken behind one of their stores against the iconic white brick wall. Brandy became a figure online. TikTok has allowed young girls to create their own real content for the first time without any restrictions and can reach an international audience. They are posting outfits of the day, get ready with me, and other kinds of fashion and beauty-related videos and a lot of their outfits include something by Brandy Melville. This has helped the brand be recognized and successful internationally.
Though there has been a lot of inclusivity in the fashion industry, but Brandy has not conformed to that idea. While the business hires people of color as models and store employees, there is heavy discrimination in the workplace. Some former employees spoke about their experiences working at Brandy. A couple of girls talked about how they recognized racism in the workplace. The white, popular girls were in the front of the store, interacting with customers. The girls of color were sometimes behind the register but were mainly in the back dealing with inventory. No one felt like they could speak up about it to the managers. Later in the film, you learn about several legal cases Brandy Melville is involved in and they didn’t deny firing people because of their race. Kate Taylor, a writer for Insider, was featured throughout the documentary. She wrote a piece around the time the scandal started the strike Brandy titled ‘Brandy Melville’s CEO doesn’t want Black people to wear the brand’s clothing, according to ex-store owner.’ More ex-employees were speaking out after the article was published. Not only does the brand discriminate against people of color, but also people of different sizes. Like I said earlier, Brandy Melville only has ‘one size’ clothes which implied ‘one size fits all’ which then changed to ‘one size fits most.’ Still not necessarily true. Their clothes fit most of their customers. Some of the girls who spoke out in the documentary were open about their eating disorders while working there and the pressure they felt to be as skinny as possible because they were the faces of the Brandy Melville storefronts. There were videos online of girls trying to lose weight to fit into Brandy Melville, and they would include the name in the title. Gen Z wouldn’t put up with a brand like this, but we are the target audience, so what’s the deal?
Now we get to the weird stuff… but first, you may be wondering where the name came from. It was based on a fictional story with two characters named Brandy and Melville. Since the name doesn’t come from a real person, who started Brandy Melville? Kate Taylor had a difficult time finding information on the founder, CEO, or even a mission statement. It turns out each store is owned by a different shell company which makes it harder to find who runs the actual brand. Brandy Melville is a trademark owned by a larger Swiss company. Eventually, Taylor discovered Stephan Marsan, the owner. He is Italian and doesn’t speak any English. One of the anonymous store owners, played by an actor in the documentary, said ‘the vibe was good’ with Stephan. Jessy is his right-hand man. He runs the Brandy Melville Instagram which, like I said before, is full of skinny girls in mostly tight clothes. Creepy that’s it’s run by a bald man with braces. No one has ever been sure of what Jessy’s official title is, but it turns out no one in the company seems to have one. It seems way too casual of a company for how successful it is. There were some clips from the inside of the headquarters and it was so unorganized. It’s definitely not a conventional brand. Which leads to another disaster in the brand. Fast fashion plays into what I wrote about before in my piece ‘Our Need For Speed’, but we’ll get into that more in part 2. Brandy Melville wasn’t popular in Italy when they were making t-shirts that said things like ‘stressed / depressed / but well dressed’. Teen girls weren’t very interested so they switched to a surfer, natural, chill vibe and started gaining attention from their target audience. Over time it has grown tremendously and is ‘an incredibly successful business. Abercrombie looked into buying brandy and their bankers were shocked by how successful the business was financially.’ Now, it has grown into the empire it is today.
This is only half of what the movie covered! There’s more to come in the future and it just gets more shocking. Films like this tell us the real stories of what’s happening behind closed doors in the world of people with power and it is fascinating.
Golf
A lifelong hobby that turned into my job
Growing up, my dad would take my mom and me out to the golf course with him a lot. There are only two things I can tell you about those trips. The first thing, being the only part I was interested in, was playing in the sand traps. The only way my parents could get me out was by telling me there was another on the next hole. The other memory, documented by pictures, is my mom having a beautiful backswing and follow-through, but the ball still in the same place.
My dad would take me to play with him and his best friend/my godfather, my Uncle Dane. We all had the best time together. As we played more together, I started going to golf camps more and more too. I was taking lessons at home and while we were on vacation in Michigan. I was trained by some great coaches and missed out on some great opportunities too. I was very involved in learning the sport, but it never developed into a passion. I played in high school from my sophomore through senior year and worked at my home course as an outside worker, which was my first job. After that my senior season, I didn’t play until my last semester of college, the spring of 2023. I played a couple of times at a course near Virginia Tech, planning on playing in my sorority’s tournament with some friends.
Before I started playing again, I had an interview at a start-up business that does trade-in events at different country clubs across the country to buy used golf clubs to resell them online. The timing didn’t work out at the time, but I accepted a job there in August and have been there ever since. I started in the production/listing department, where I got to handle the products and learn details about golf clubs and equipment to an extent I never would have comprehended days before I started. A couple of months ago I got a promotion and have been more involved in marketing and event planning. I have made numerous connections in the last couple months and am proud of what I accomplished so far. My job has immersed me in the golf world deeper than I had imagined I ever would be.
Golf is a unique and difficult sport. It’s easily accessible (there are golf clubs, quite literally, everywhere), intricate, and a solo sport. It’s fun to try out new courses because they bring new challenges, but also, so does every round. You can only rely on yourself for the quality of your game, and that is infuriating yet nice also. You never know where any ball is generally going to end up until you complete your follow through. Golf brings people together and I have learned that much more since I started my new position.
Throughout my life, I have felt differently about the sport as a whole. It’s frustrating to play but can also be so fun. I have some light goals related to golf, not only in my game but also in my career, and I hope I can achieve them!
Benson
Boone
A couple of months ago, I got a TikTok on my ‘For You Page’ posted by Benson Boone. The video was a clip from his song which was coming out soon, ‘Beautiful Things.’ I favorited the video and luckily rediscovered it the day after the song came out on Spotify. It became an immediate favorite of mine and blew up on the internet quickly. Since then, he has released his debut album after releasing singles and EPs in 2021. I recently learned that he was on American Idol in 2021 but dropped out early in the season because he didn’t want to be discovered on the show. He started posting videos on TikTok and gained a lot more popularity online. Eventually, he signed a label with Night Street Records after being recognized by Imagine Dragons’ Dan Reynolds. He is a talented guy whose fame was only a matter of time.
Benson’s beautiful voice paired with his impressive songwriting makes his music breathtaking. His music is enjoyable not only because of the lyrics but also because the melodies are so catchy. He may be new to the charts but he currently has around 60 million listeners a month on Spotify which makes him the #31 most listened to artist in the world. I’m excited for him to come out with more music and hope to see him live one day.

The Muse’s Revenge
By Ilya Milstein
This piece tells a painful story of obsession, power, and lust. It’s clear that the muse is threatening the artist’s life in his studio with a gun. Surrounded by the paintings that carries her misery. She hasn’t shot him yet, but the scene is set to make us believe that she will. The pieces that fill the space portray the discomfort the muse feels as she poses for him. She tries to cover herself and is nervous but is probably trapped by his infatuation with her. She is finally fed up and has taken matters into her own hands. And we will never know how the story ends.
Chicago
It’s hard not to love visiting a new city, but falling in love with a new city is different. I fell in love with Chicago in the summer of 2021. My whole family was getting together for my cousin’s wedding which further led to a girl's trip with a friend of mine. I want to take you through my trip and I have generally based the timeline and activities on my memory and the photo in my camera roll.
My parents and I arrived in Chicago and headed straight to our hotel, the Westin Chicago River North which was right on the canal in the heart of downtown Chicago. The canal was one of, if not, my favorite parts of the city. In the two weeks I was there, I spent a lot of time at the canal reading, going on walks, hanging out and sitting, and grabbing coffee. The window in our room faced the House of Blues and I happened to bring my t-shirt that has the House of Blues on it as a pajama shirt, which was a fun coincidence. Right after we checked in, my dad and I got ready to go to a Cubs game. We met my cousin, Laura, and her dad, my Uncle Gary, and we had a blast together, per usual. The Cubs beat the Cardinals 10-5 which led to my buying my favorite baseball hat. Later, we had a family dinner at an Italian restaurant with the bride and groom-to-be. After dinner, my cousins and I went to a bar together and we had so much fun. They introduced me to mocktails in the bars because they have a wide enough bar to make a variety of fun non-alcoholic drinks (I am intolerant to alcohol). One of the following days, as our family explored the city, my parents and I went to visit some family from the other side. My cousin, Ben, and his husband, Joe, live in a stunning house more south of the city than the Southside. Their house has the most beautiful details such as a silver foil ceiling in the kitchen and a crystal-ball looking thing at the bottom of the handrail for the spiral staircase. Their house has a whole history behind it and is known to be haunted. The next morning, it was wedding day! We all got ready and had some professional makeup help, which I desperately needed for my lavender eyeliner to pair with my floral dress. My cousin, Cassey, was the most breathtaking bride and had a beautiful ceremony with her husband, Brad. We all had the best time at the reception. I think that part of the reason this trip was so special was because it was the first time my older cousins saw me as an adult. I am 10-20 years younger than some of my cousins which means it took a little longer for me to mature in their eyes. But throughout this trip my cousins made me feel more accepted as we went on our little adventures and made our own memories without our parents.
For the second half of my trip, I spent it with my friend, Rachel, who lives in Chicago now! We had a fantastic time and fell more in love with this city as we explored together. First, I got us tickets to a tourist trap called, WNDR Museum. They have some cool illusions but not worth the time or money, in my opinion. We later met up with a friend who is from the suburbs of Chicago after a walk down Oak Street Beach. We met him for dinner and ended the night at Navy Pier. The view from the Ferris wheel was spectacular! The next morning we had brunch on the canal which was lovely. Like I said before, the canal is one of my favorite parts of this city and the view never gets old. Of course we had to hit the Bean which was bigger than I had expected and somewhat anticlimactic considering it’s a big silver bean. Rachel had to take an exam for a summer course, so we hung out at the Starbucks across the street from the Bean. Maybe I was a little worn out from looking at it that whole time. My friend, Lily, who I stayed with in Colorado was also in town and we got to hang out. Her friend, Brynn, lives there and she brought us to some fun little spots around town. The most memorable place is a speakeasy that had karaoke and we lived for it. I had some yummy mocktails and an absolute blast. Rachel and I just loved everything about the city. We had a great time just walking the streets and exploring the nooks and crannies of the city. I’d say the only mistake we made together was how we decided to go back to visit my cousin at his house. We didn’t want to pay for an Uber to his place, so we decided to take the red line to the last stop. Bad decision. We got an Uber and put in the address my cousin gave me and then as we got closer, we realized that the address didn’t exist. Our Uber dropped us off in the middle of a neighborhood and my cousin sprinted to get us. Honestly, I don’t think my parents know this story but it was an adventure for sure. Good times in Chicago for sure.
I love Chicago. I loved being able to spend time with a lot of my family but also being out there with a girlfriend! If I were to live in a big city, Chicago is the only one I’ve visited that I would live in. It’s a cleaner New York and I appreciate that. I want to go back as soon as I can!
