Jellycat Exchange Menu
For Christmas this year, my house decided to do a Jellycat exchange! Since there were a total of eight of us, I decided to make us a nice dinner for all of us to enjoy together.
I was so excited to host our house in our upstairs apartment for this exchange and wanted to add some great food to a memorable night! I went through several different menu ideas but finally landed on this. I knew there was something everyone could enjoy, but surprisingly, even those who didn’t like certain foods before ended up trying and loving them. I hope you can take some inspiration for a night with friends and family or keep it all to yourself!
I started by preparing the ragu the day before and knew this 3.5 lb chuck roast was going to take a good long while in the slow cooker. I seared it before putting it in the pot with carrots, onion, celery, garlic, tomato puree, red wine, beef broth, rosemary, and basil. After almost 12 hours of cooking on low, I shredded the meat and let it cook in the sauce a little longer before putting it in the fridge for the next night. I also made the Nutella peppermint bark and put it straight into the freezer so it would break easily the next day. I simply spread some Nutella on parchment paper lining a sheet pan, sprinkled broken candy canes, and drizzled some white chocolate on top.
On the day of the party, I ran by Trader Joe's to get some burrata, Wisconsin Cheddar, and some last-minute ingredients. I started by making the butter for my garlic bread, which was well-known in my college business endeavor, Pastabilities. I would typically use a loaf of Italian bread for this but got a baguette for tonight since we had other sides. I like to broil my garlic bread on high to really toast the bread, which I did right before dinner was served so they were fresh. I then roasted the cauliflower with olive oil, salt, and pepper and kept it warm in the oven. Such an easy and simple addition to a meal. Next, for the Caprese salad, I sliced some Roma tomatoes, drizzled them in olive oil, and mixed in some salt and pepper. After removing the stracciatella from the burrata, and saving the fresh mozzarella for another day, I added lots of fresh basil, lemon zest, salt, and pepper. After putting it on the salad, I topped the whole thing off with ripped fresh basil. A fantastic creamy caprese salad with a bit more freshness to it. Finally, before serving everything, I cooked some polenta in chicken broth with brown butter, and after it was done cooking, added in the cheddar from Wisconsin. Safe to say, a few of us had a couple trips back to the kitchen after the first serving.
I made some well-sized meringues when I was at my parent's house, and brought them home for this meal. When preparing these cookies, I made sure there was a well in it, so the whipped cream and lemon curd wouldn’t slide right off. The whipped cream was homemade with brown sugar and vanilla, topped with some lemon curd. I tried to blend it into the cream a bit. Some chopped strawberries and raspberries were the perfect addition to this dessert. I served it with a couple pieces of the Nutella bark so there was something fruity and something chocolatey.
Fanboy
One Year Later
I can imagine that most people reading this right now have been reading this since I published this blog on January 1st of this year. The first food piece I wrote about was a review of Fanboy, which at the time was almost brand new and the hot new thing. Now, it has settled into the city a bit more.
I recently returned for a friend's birthday, and though I had dinner already, getting food there was inevitable. I split the food with a friend and we landed on the popcorn chicken and green goddess gem wedge salad. The fried chicken thigh bites were coated in some great spices and was brought out with some flavored aioli and lettuce to make wraps. Everything blended so well together, I really enjoyed this.
This was the first time I tried green goddess dressing, and it was good. Not very memorable to be honest. Looking back, I was super into the lettuce. The texture was nice and it was so fresh that it seemed to be the star of the show in my eyes. There could have been more bacon, but the tomatoes and herbs were nice additions to the salad.
To drink, I asked for a mocktail, and our server said they have a signature one with a non-alcoholic IPA, and I am not into that, so I asked for it without. I think there was a shrub of some kind because there was a vinegary taste to it. When I worked for Milkmans’ in the Dairy Market in Charlottesville, I made a strawberry balsamic shrub every week along with other kinds, so the taste and smell of various shrubs are ingrained in my brain. Shrubs aren’t my fav, but I still finished the drink.
I’m so glad I got to go back to Fanboy and try their food again a year later! I was in great company again and it definitely made the experience great. The food was good, the lights could have been better, and the vibes, like always, were there.
Secret Square Pizza
Not too long ago, I discovered this ‘Detroit-style’ pizza business that has very limited hours and pizzas based in RVA. You need to sign up to get notified as soon as their weekly menu and sign-up sheet are released. I learned that they run out of spots very quickly, so better to order sooner as opposed to later.
Soon after another sign-up dropped, I ordered the Rainbow pizza which is topped with pesto, marinara, and vodka. The base turned out to be what is like a sourdough focaccia. The combination of the dough and sauces was amazing, and the sauces were pretty flavorful and tasted fresh.
So … the pictures on the website were a bit deceiving. What I ordered looked like it was supposed to come with some ricotta on top. Looking back on the menu, it doesn’t mention ricotta like some of the others do. But based on the picture on the home page, it seemed to include it, and there wasn’t an option to make notes or specify anything. I think it would have been a great addition. Also, the pizza was way smaller than I expected. It came in a box that I would usually get for one slice to go. So that was funny considering the price and waitlist.
It was good pizza, but it was nothing to write home about. I wasn’t as mind-blown as I was expecting and hoping to be. I’m glad I got to try it though and I would definitely get it again sometime in the future. Try something new on the menu though.
Three Meals for $25 in RVA
Before the year ended, I wanted to challenge myself to find three spots to get breakfast, lunch, and dinner for $25, not including tips. I’ve got a list of places to try around RVA, and I wanted to throw a couple new ones into this mix. I’m excited to share this and would love to turn this into a series!
Chewy’s Bagels
For breakfast, I tried Chewy’s Bagels in Carytown for the first time. Growing up in Charlottesville, I grew up spoiled with Bodo’s Bagels nearby. I’m hesitant to try new bagel places because I know I will always be disappointed comparing them to Bodo’s, but I was excited to have a sourdough bagel. I got an everything bagel with a side of cream cheese and made it a meal, which got me a pickle spear, a bag of chips, and a drink for three extra dollars. This total came out to $8.50, which isn’t bad considering everything I got. The sourdough with everything bagel seasoning was a great combo, and the bagel was good. But I could tell that it wasn’t fresh even though I was there at 9:30 a.m. I would definitely go back and would love to try their other bagels! Definitely worth the price.
Christian’s Pizza
Next, Christian’s Pizza is another way I grew up spoiled in Charlottesville, and I’m so thankful there is one near me in RVA. Their slices are fantastic quick bites for really great prices. They have various pizzas ready for slices to be heated up, but I love my cheese or pepperoni slices. For this, I got a cheese slice and blood orange San Pelligrino for $6.75. The tip of the pizza had a bit of a bumpy ride home, so I took a bite before taking this picture. I always forget how nostalgic and simply delicious their pizza is. It doesn’t look like much, but boy, does it do the job. You can never go wrong with Christian’s.
Catina Bakery
I was very excited for this last place. Catina Bakery is a small store located west of Willow Lawn. Their menu consists of a variety of bánh mis and different drinks. After ordering a grilled pork bánh mi and a mango slush boba for $11.30, I took a look at everything in the store and discovered they have a great selection of sides, snacks, sauces, drinks, and more. I already knew I’d be going back. I couldn’t wait to get home, so I pulled into a parking lot and unwrapped one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had. The pork was tender and perfectly saucy, placed in some amazing bread. My mom always said a good báhn mi starts with great bread, and they proved that statement right. I’m excited to try this place again!
The final total came out to $26.55, which was a bit over my goal. This was a fun challenge I’ll definitely be doing again!
Idle Hands
Idle Hands
Idle Hands has been one of those places I have heard about since I moved to Richmond, but haven’t had the opportunity to try it. I heard that you need to get here before 9 am if you want to try a baked good. After a couple attempts, I finally got ahold of some baked goods!
My first time going in, I got there around noon, and all they had left was bread. I ended up getting one of their peppermint mochas, which was a special. It was not good. I choked down a couple sips, offered it to my roommates, and eventually gave up on not trying to waste it, but it was not worth the discomfort.
Finally, after waking up at 7:30 on a chilly Sunday morning, I headed straight to the line waiting outside the door, which happens to be two blocks away from my house. After about an 8-10 minute wait, I got my butter croissant, canelé, and hot chocolate. A simple but fulfilling breakfast. The hot chocolate was fine, and so was everything else. For how many great things I heard about this spot, I’m disappointed to say it was a bit overhyped in my opinion. To be fair, I have never had a canelé before, but like I said before, it was still just fine. I thought the quality of this simple breakfast would impress me, and I’m sad to report it did not.
I’d like to go back again, considering its reputation and location to me. I wanted to try some simple things on their menu, but maybe I should try the more adventurous things like their cookie dough croissant or orange chocolate roll, or just their bread.
The Mayor
Driving through Carytown in RVA one day, I noticed the new occupant of Carytown Cupcakes, The Mayor.
Based on the name and outside, I couldn’t tell what kind of food they made. After looking at their menu online, I learned they make their own sausages in-house. They have an impressive menu that has reasonable prices. After learning about The Mayor, I started seeing the name on different menus around Richmond, VA. They have definitely made a name for themselves in this city.
Going in, I intended on trying their bratwurst or wagyu hot dog but was intrigued by their currywurst. It’s what it sounds like: a bratwurst with curry flavoring. I ordered that with caramelized onions on top, a side of chips, and a Coke to drink.
First, the Coke was mini … I have never gotten a mini can of soda at a restaurant before, and I got it way before my food arrived, so I saved it till I got it. I immediately burnt my tongue on my food and had to wait a few minutes but it was still too hot, but I was a little too impatient to wait. Was I blown away? No. Did it taste like bratwurst or curry? Not really. It was good, but I’ll say I brought it home and forgot about it. Oops! I definitely want to try other things on their menu, but I am not super impressed so far.
