Surviving your 20’s, coming from a woman in her 20’s

What I’ve experienced without much experience

Being a woman in your 20’s is hard. You’re recently fully independent, figuring out what you want to do career wise, meeting people post-grad is quite difficult, and men suck. Everything is new. Living in a new place or at home, you’re exploring something new, whether it’s a city or managing a new relationship of living with your parents post-grad. Everyone’s story is different but there are some ideas I have thought of that I wanted to share. I’ve made a list and I hope it makes sense and is actually helpful.

  • You are the only person in charge of your life. Do whatever you want! No one is stopping you from doing anything your heart desires so do whatever you would like!

  • One of the only things out of our control is time, so make the most of it. I’ve recently realized the real meaning of ‘you only live once’. Live your life to the fullest and do everything, especially while you’re young!

  • Always prioritize yourself. If you aren’t feeling up to going out with your friends over the weekend, never hesitate to say no. I think a lot of people our age are people pleasers and are nervous to say no to hanging out with friends because they don’t want to seem lame or disappoint their friends. But, sometimes at the end of the day all you want to do is lay in bed and watch TV while you’re scrolling through every app on your phone and end your peaceful night with a nice book. Put yourself before everything. Mental health is no joke and you don’t want to wear yourself out. Do what recharges you.

  • Figure out what you want to do career wise. Keep in mind that nothing is set in stone. There are a million different kinds of jobs in this world and I recommend doing the research to find what you really want to do. If you have a degree, you don’t necessarily have to limit yourself to what you studied in school. I studied sociology and upon further research I learned I want to be involved in the food industry.

    • Mentors. When you are figuring out what you want to do career wise, I recommend finding the people who are doing that job. Reach out and offer to meet for coffee. I have used this time to ask questions about how this person got to where they are in their career and how they built their brand. It’s helpful to hear a variety of stories, make connections, and it leads to such helpful advice.

  • Do new things around your city. If you’re living in a new city or back in your hometown, try new things! Whether it’s food, a walk, a museum, etc, explore! You never know where your new favorite thing is hiding! I wish that I explored the other parts of my city sooner!

  • People come and go. Throughout my life, I’ve made some great friends. I thought they were going to be there for the rest of my life. But things change and people grow. Whether you grow out of each other, they did you dirty or physical distance separated you, it’s ok to lose friends. Sometimes it hurts more than heartbreak, but it helps you grow as a person.

  • Confidence is key. Surrounding yourself with people who allow you to be your most true and authentic self. It will help you gain so much confidence and it is absolutely for the best.

  • Work and life. Sometimes it’s hard to not feel like work is your life. I currently work a 9-5 desk job and I can confidently say it is not for me. But what keeps me going is doing little things throughout the week. Going out to dinner/spending time with friends and having a project to work on that doesn’t feel like work (all the time)(this website, diamond painting, etc) are my favs.

  • Boys are out, men are in. Playing games is boring and tiring. Be with someone who makes you confident in your relationship.

  • Celebrate achievements. Sometimes all I want for the little wins in life are sushi and doughnuts. And that’s all I need. Give yourself a little treat!

Olivia Rodrigo

An IT Girl of Hollywood

I remember early January 2021, seeing a post about the actress from the new High School Musical show releasing a song that was gaining attention. After listening to this song for the first time, it became an addiction. It was heart wrenching and passionate but relatable for so many teenage girls. That was the beginning of Olivia Rodrigo’s reign over girls and women around the world.

If you’ve ever listened to her music, you know her music reeks of teenage angst but she also has a sweet and vulnerable side. Her music is about boys, heartbreak, anxiety, being jealous and more. Olivia has introduced rock to a lot of young girls and allows them scream their hearts out. She gained popularity from her starring role in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series which led to her relationship with her co-star, Joshua Bassett. Drama ensued when SOUR, her debut album, was released in 2021. The album was full of raw heartbreak that you can rock out to or sob to.  Her music hits listeners hard and it got even better when GUTS was released in 2023. The lyrics were bold and relatable but in a different way than SOUR. The only person I can think to compare her to right now is Avril Lavigne.

How celebrities present themselves in the public eye is so important to their brand. Olivia manages to fit every occasion so appropriately between award shows, her performances, going out clothes, everyday wear, etc. She is elegant, sexy, classy, and naturally stunning. Her live performances look incredible. She slays. I can only dream of going to one of her shows.

I admire Olivia for her guts, lolz. I guarantee anyone reading this right now has heard at least one of her songs before and you should listen to more.

Olivia Rodrigo is an icon in today's music scene and she’s here to stay.

‘I think my life might be better if I lived in Colorado'

-Renee Rapp

Colorado

One of my simple, yet most expensive, pleasures in life is skiing. I learned how to ski as a kid in Park City, UT but hadn’t skied anywhere like that since I was 8. I was used to icy slopes in Virginia and one trip to Canada (it took me two hours to do one run under two feet of fresh powder). During my previous trip to Colorado, I didn’t have the chance to go skiing but had always dreamed of it. Spring break in 2023, I was lucky enough to go to Boulder, Winter Park and Steamboat.

I started off in Boulder to visit one of my very best friends, Lily. Lily grew up outside of Boulder and ended up going to school at CU! The last time I visited her, she was a freshman and lived in her dorm but since it was New Years we were at her mom’s house. This time we were staying at her house in Boulder and got to explore a little bit more. We went to Dark Horse for karaoke, a get together with her friends, and spent some time with her lovely mother. We don’t get to see each other very often, but when we do, it reminds me how special Lily is to me and I cherish that.

After I hesitantly left Lily, I took the train from Denver to Winter Park and was picked up by my dad’s two best friends, Uncle Dane (my godfather) and Uncle Mikey. I see my Uncle Dane a couple times a year and I am so thankful, but I hadn’t seen my Uncle Mikey since my family and I moved from Las Vegas in 2010. It was an absolute pleasure to spend this time with them. All three of us were on the slopes almost every day. Our last day, they went around town to shops and hung out at home, but I couldn’t just sit at home while I had the chance to ski on the most amazing slopes I had ever been on.

Growing up in Virginia, I grew up surrounded by nature. Colorado is so different. The only word that comes to mind to describe it is mighty. Like I mentioned before, the only place I have skied that compares to this experience was Park City. I remember the hidden twists and turns in the woods, but there were more than I could count in Colorado. Overall, we went to Winter Park, Mary Jane and Steamboat and they were all distinctly different. Mary Jane and Winter Park were somewhat similar considering you can get from one to the other off of the ski lift. The views were jaw dropping and no picture could do it justice.

I love Colorado. At some point in my life, I will live there. I don’t know where but I think I would just be happy anywhere from Denver to a small town. I can’t wait to go back soon and tell you more about it!

My Comfort Meal

Easy. Simple. Delicious.

This meal is quick to throw together any night!

Ingredients

1 cup (4 oz, one serving size) of pasta (linguine, fusilli, etc), cooked a little under al dente

olive oil

1/2 - 1 small white or sweet onion, diced

As much garlic as your heart desires (4-7 cloves)

5-6 basil leaves, ripped up

28 oz of tomato puree

Salt, pepper, red pepper flakes, garlic powder to taste

1/2 - 1 ball of burrata

  1. Cook pasta a little before it’s al dente and save some pasta water.

  2. Start by heating up olive oil in a medium pot or saucepan. When it’s hot enough, throw in the onion and garlic. When it starts to brown, throw in the basil.

  3. When the onion, garlic, and basil has crisped up, add the tomato puree.

  4. Add seasonings to your liking. Simmer for as long as you’d like.

  5. Put a spoonful of sauce, the cooked pasta, and add pasta water as needed. I like to add it to loosen up the sauce and cook the pasta a little more in it.

  6. When the sauce is cooked down and thicker, add it to a bowl. I rip my pieces of burrata and spread the pieces around then drizzle olive oil on top. If I’m treating myself, I stir stracciatella into the sauce. Toss the cheese and olive oil together into the sauce.

  7. Add the leftover sauce to a container. It’s so quick and easy to just cook the pasta and add the sauce!
